DESIGN PROCESS

Lighting design in Colorado Springs, planned with your designer

Good lighting starts on paper. We meet with you, your interior designer or your builder, walk the space and talk about how each room gets used: where you cook, read, entertain and wind down.

1. Walk the space
We look at ceilings, framing, windows and the finishes you have picked.
2. Plan the layers
Ambient, task and accent light, placed and circuited so each layer can be set on its own.
3. Written options
Clear options in writing, so you can choose the fixtures and controls that fit.
4. Install and program
Our own electricians install, aim and program everything, then walk you through it.

RECESSED LIGHTING

Recessed cans vs wafer lights

Recessed cans
A can housing sits above the ceiling and holds a trim and an LED module. Cans give you more trims, beam spreads and adjustable gimbals for aiming at art or a fireplace wall. They are a strong pick for new builds where there is room above the drywall.
Wafer (canless) lights
Wafers are thin LEDs that mount right in the drywall with a small driver. They fit tight joist bays and are quicker to add in a remodel. The tradeoff is fewer trim and aiming choices.

Either way, we lay recessed lighting out for even light with less glare, not a grid of holes in the ceiling.

COLOR AND DIMMING

LED color temperature and dimming

Color temperature is measured in Kelvin. Lower numbers look warm and golden. Higher numbers look cool and crisp. Keeping one color across a room makes it feel calm and finished.

2700K
Warm and cozy. Great for living rooms, bedrooms and dining rooms.
3000K
Warm white with a little more clarity. A favorite for kitchens and baths.
3500K to 4000K
Neutral to cool. Good for garages, workshops and task areas.
Warm dim
Fixtures that turn warmer as they dim, like an old incandescent bulb.

Smooth dimming depends on the fixture, the driver and the dimmer working together. Mismatched parts cause flicker, buzzing or lights that drop out at low levels. We pick compatible parts and set the low end so lights fade cleanly.

SCENES AND KEYPADS

Lighting scenes and keypads

A scene is a saved set of light levels across a room or the whole house. One button sets Evening, Dining or Goodnight, just like the demo at the top of this page.

A keypad replaces a row of switches with one clean control, and we label every button in plain words. Popular spots are the entry, the kitchen and a Goodnight button by the bed that turns off the whole house.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING

Exterior and landscape lighting in Colorado Springs

Outdoor lighting makes a home feel welcoming and helps you see steps, paths and the driveway. We light the front of the home, trees, walkways, decks, railings and patios with low-glare fixtures aimed where you need them.

Pikes Peak weather is hard on outdoor parts. Wind, hail, fast temperature swings and strong sun at altitude all wear on fixtures and connections. We use fixtures and wiring rated for wet locations and put lights on timers or dusk-to-dawn controls so they come on at the right time all year.

ACCENT LIGHTING

Accent, slat and cove lighting

Accent lighting is the layer people notice: LED tape in slat walls, cove lighting in tray ceilings, under-cabinet and toe-kick lights, lit floating shelves and backlit mirrors.

The details make or break it. We use channels and diffusers so you never see dots, place drivers where they can be serviced and hide the wiring in the build.

SMART CONTROLS

Smart lighting controls for your home

We install Lutron lighting controls and similar systems that let you dim, schedule and run scenes from a keypad or your phone. Have the lights come on when you pull in, run a vacation schedule while you are away, or turn off the house from bed. We program it before we leave and show you how to change it.

REMODELS AND NEW BUILDS

Lighting for remodels and new custom homes

New custom homes
We work from the plans with your builder and designer, so boxes, blocking and wire runs are in place before drywall.
Remodels
We add lighting with less patching, use canless lights where space is tight and check that your panel can handle the new load.

FAQ

Custom lighting FAQ

Do you design the lighting or just install it?

Both. We can design a lighting plan with you, or work from a plan your designer or architect already made.

Can you add recessed lighting to an existing ceiling?

Usually, yes. Canless wafer lights make it easier to add light to a finished ceiling with less patching. We check framing, insulation and access first.

What color temperature should I pick?

Most homes look best at 2700K to 3000K. We often suggest warmer light in living spaces and slightly crisper light in kitchens and baths.

Why do my LED lights flicker when dimmed?

Usually the dimmer and the fixture are not a good match. We swap in compatible parts and set the low end so they dim smoothly.

Do I need a smart home system to use scenes?

No. A lighting control system can run scenes from wall keypads alone. The phone app is a bonus, not a requirement.

Do you install outdoor and landscape lighting?

Yes. We light paths, steps, decks, trees and the front of the home with fixtures rated for Colorado weather.

Do you pull permits for lighting work?

Yes, when the work needs one. We pull the permit and schedule the inspection.

How much does custom lighting cost?

It depends on the number of fixtures, the controls, ceiling access and finishes. After a walkthrough, you get clear written options to choose from.
